[Alexandria Gazette.]
Saturday, while Mr. Frank Brooke, of
Warrenton, was in his store, surrounded
by a party of friends [as has heretofore been
briefly mentioned], he grasped a pistol lying
near on a shelf that was apparently unloaded,
for he, looking at it, saw that all the
chambers were, as he thought, empty, and,
making some jesting remarks to his com-
panions, turned the muzzle to his breast
and playfully pulled the trigger.
Now, it happened that the one chamber con-
cealed by the hammer was loaded, and the
weapon exploded, the ball (of 32-caliber)
entering about two inches above the
left nipple, immediately over the heart, and
passing through the lung. Mr. Brooke im-
mediately fell. He was carried up-stairs,
and the doctors being sent for, an examina-
tion was held, when it was found that the
bullet was still in the body. The wound
was not probed, as it was considered dan-
gerous because of the close proximity to
the heart. The missile, it is supposed, took
an upright direction and is lodged some-
where in the vicinity of the shoulder.
The patient is doing very well, and there
is no apprehension of any untoward result.
