WHAT IS A PEER?

What is a Peer ?—A useless thing-
A costly toy to please a king
A bauble near the throne;
A lump of animated clay-
A gaudy pageant of the day—
An incubus—a drone.
What is a peer ! A nation's curse
A pauper on the public purse—
Corruption's own Jackal;
A haughty domineering blade-
A cuckold at a masquerade-
A dandy at a ball
Ye butterflies whom kings create
Ye caterpillars of the state-;
Know that your time is near;.-
Enlightened France will lead the van
To overthrow your worthless clan :
This moral learn—that God made Man:
But never made a Peer.
