What bliss it must be to pound the editorial typewriter in Germany, these times! All the German editor has to look out for is the toes of the autocracy. He can sail into all else with an abandon that must make the sanctum glow with joy, while it is about half the labor of the American editor to study out what she shall not say, out of respect for the police, for decency's sake, or for regard for policies that make the circulation hump.
For instance, here's the Crefeld Anzeiger with this: "There are more than a million war widows in Germany. All the widows must get married at once, preferably to wounded or unfit soldiers. It may be added that the utilization of crippled soldiers and war-stricken women in the interest of the empire's future wars has the cordial approval of our great Hindenburg."
Can you picture an American editor who got off anything like that? If you can, it would be a nice picture to hang up in a butcher shop; and an army of great Hindenburgs couldn't save him either.
America only entered the war to deprive Germany victory.--Frankfurter Zeitung. It is a delight to get from a German newspaper an exact statement of fact.
