Being joined by Capt. Hickenbottom with 25 of the Amherst militia, We marched on Tuesday last to Winston's meadows, where our scouts informed that they had discovered a party of Indians, about 3 miles off. As they were on their return, Capt. Hickenbottom marched to join Capt. Ingles, and got down New-River. I, with 19 men, and my Ensign, took a different rout, in quest of them. We marched next day on their tracks, till two hours before sun-set, when We heard some guns; and soon after discovered 3 large fires; upon this we immediately advanced, and found they were on an island: being within gun-shot, we fired upon them, and loading again, forded the creek. The Indians, after killing Jacob Kimberlin, a prisoner they had with them, made but a slight resistance and ran off. We found one Indian killed on the spot, and at a distance, four blankets shot through and bloody. We took all their bundles, 4 guns, 8 tomahawks, and two mares. The party consisted of upwards of 20 Indians. By the blood on their trails, several of them are wounded.
