Full Text

Radicalism Overleaping Itself—Congress has sent a committee to inquire whether Maryland has a State government "republican in form" or not. The "inquiry" in the case is a mere sham. What the committee intend to do is, to decide what is a "republican form of government," not on any evidence of facts, but according to their own ideas; and then Congress is expected to apply the rule, which they will thus lay down, to all the States in succession. Last year it was held that the government of Connecticut was not "republican," and probably this year Ohio will fall under the same condemnation. It would be rather curious if Congress should discover that there were only three or four "republican" States in the Union. Where would it find its authority to reconstruct all the rest?—N. Y. Times.
