EARNS $30,000 A YEAR IN MOVIES

Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 13. Little Mary Pickford is earning $30,000 a year as a "movie" star. A year ago she was earning $10,000 a year. She is not quite twenty years old. And yet she has only just commenced to dream, she says, of what she will do.

Mary Pickford is out here in the good old California sunshine convalescing and working at the same time. Not so very long ago she had a serious operation for appendicitis and lay at death's door in a New York hospital.

The doctors gave up hope of saving her. But she made a determined fight for life and won, just as she has done in everything else she has tried.

However, the illness and the doctor's imperative orders to sleep many hours, live simply and much of the time in the open, made it necessary to give up her "Good Little Devil."

She came West and settled down in "a love of a bungalow," as she calls it, with her mother.

Not being willing to remain idle, she accepted an offer of the Famous Players' company and is working again in the pictures. Her hours are easy. She is in the open air a good part of the time and there is no night work. So little Mary is rapidly gaining health and strength again.

To me she said: "I feel much better since I've been here. Of course, unlike the stage, I have my work during the day and can go to bed early. No traveling, and then I can have a home life. We—that is ma and I—have a dear little bungalow. I get out every morning and water the ferns and the lawn. We have a big grate fire. I sit in front of it and have all sorts of dreams."
