GLEANINGS

—George J. Horton, of Patch Grove was here on business, Thursday.

—Mrs. James Glennon and family of Potosi, spent Sunday in this city.

—Mrs. M. E. Ruegger spent the week-end with friends in Fennimore.

—Mrs. W. W. Rees left Friday morning for Minneapolis to visit friends and relatives.

—Misses Lela Schuppener and Bernice Smith of Stitzer, visited friends here, Saturday.

—Mrs. A. J. Mitchell went to Fennimore Thursday to visit her daughter, Mrs. Frank Tuckwood.

—Mrs. M. Wells, of Fennimore, spent a few days of last week with Miss Myrtle Drew of this city.

—James W. Millen and Lavern Snider of Glen Haven, were in Lancaster, Monday on business.

—Misses Edna Lind and Mildred Taner, of Stitzer, were guests of Miss Fannie Frawley over Sunday.

—Miss Carolyn Frothingham left Sunday for her home in Madison, after a week's visit with friends and relatives.

—Mrs. A. P. Anderson and children Paul and Helen, are guests of Mrs. Anderson's parents, Charles Dickinson and wife.

—Albert Esser, of Finley, Iowa, arrived here one day last week to visit at the home of Anton Schuster's in the Fourth ward.

—Mrs. Harlin Johnson returned home to Boscobel Monday afternoon, after visiting over Sunday with her husband, here.

—Mrs. George Finney arrived home last Tuesday night from her eastern trip. Her daughter, Nettie, arrived on Monday night.

—Mrs. H. O'Hara and daughter returned to their home in Fennimore Saturday after spending a couple of days here with friends.

Mrs. J. H. Bennett entertained R. J. Bennett and family, Etta and Lea Bennett and Mr. and Mrs. Bethan at a six o'clock dinner, Sunday.

—Miss Effie Garrett left Friday morning for Milwaukee where she will visit with her friend, Miss Florence Everson, a former school teacher here.

—Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burrows and son Frank and Mrs. John Cramer motored to Galena Sunday to see Mr. Burrows' brother, who has been very sick.

—Dr. J. H. Fowler and wife, and son James, Jr., Ethel Peterson, Hilda Fischer and Everett Royal attended the football games at Richland Center Saturday.

—Several auto loads of Lancaster people motored to the home of Nick Heinrich's Friday night and attended a dance there. They report an unusually good time.

—Joseph Caspers and family took a pleasure trip to Dubuque, Monday, returning by Sinsinawa, where they left their daughter, Irene, who is attending St. Claire's college.

—Mrs. Rudolph Sanders, who has been visiting the past week at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Schreiner, returned to her home in Madison, Monday afternoon.

—Miss Ramona Keitlinger, who is teaching school near Fennimore, passed through here Friday on her way to Beetown to visit over Sunday with her friend, Miss Lulu Birch.

—Mr. and Mrs. John Pennock of Bloomington, visited several days of last week at the J. C. Pendleton and Hiram Pennock homes. They left Friday for Fennimore, where they will visit a short time with friends and relatives.

—J. E. Humphrey and wife of Patch Grove, and Miss Bessie Gibbs, who has been visiting with them, motored to Lancaster Sunday. Miss Gibbs returned home and Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey spent the day visiting with Charles Dickinson and family.

—Eber Rice of the town of Lima was a Lancaster visitor, Saturday. Mr. Rice recently sold his forty-acre farm for a good price and is now looking for another location. We hope that he will stay in Grant county and locate near Lancaster if he can find what suits him.

—Mrs. Arthur Boerner and little daughter left Friday morning for their home in Port Washington, after a two week's visit with Mrs. Boerner's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jordan of this city. Mrs. Fay Barstow (nee Pearl Jordan) and son Vincent accompanied them home for a brief visit.

—Ralph Leader and Max Royal left Wednesday morning for Marengo, Ia., after a couple of weeks' visit here at the Dr. J. H. Fowler home. Mrs. J. H. Fowler, Mrs. D. C. Johnson and Miss Millie Harlowe accompanied them home as far as Dubuque, returning the same day.

—Miss Elizabeth McCoy gave a dancing party last Monday night at her home. Those present were: Janice Eastman, Bernice Angus, Cecile Bryan, Edith Zeigler, Barbara Barnett, Valetta Appleby, Hilda Fischer, Vera Burr, Dorothy Hickok, Elva Cooley and Katherine Burr. Light refreshments were served and a good time was enjoyed by all.

—Chris. Shaben, of Beetown, was a Lancaster business visitor, Thursday.

—John Dobson, who has been very sick the past month, is able to be out again.

—Albert Finnegan living in the eastern part of the city, is erecting a fine house.

—F. H. Baldwin and Mr. B. Glasier of Bloomington, were Lancaster visitors Monday.

—Mrs. Walter Boyes and daughter, Myrtle, visited with friends in Dubuque last Tuesday.

—W. P. Peters the oil inspector of Dodgeville, was in Lancaster Tuesday on business.

—John Black left Monday morning for Highland, where he will visit with friends for a brief time.

—Mr. and Mrs. Frank Boernor of Liberty, are the parents of a baby girl, born Monday, Nov. 1.

—F. C. Meyer arrived home Monday from Milwaukee where he has been visiting relatives for the past few days.

—Miss Elsia Kinzel, who teaches in the Platteville high school, spent the week-end here with friends and relatives.

—Mrs. M. E. Ruegger (nee Nettie Borah of Flint, Michigan, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Borah.

—Mrs. H. L. Van Dusen of Madison arrived here Saturday noon to visit with Mrs. Elsie Van Dusen and other friends.

—Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vesperman and family motored to Bloomington Wednesday and attended the Welsh-Brendemuel wedding.

—Misses Edna and Bessie Kerr, Ben Cohen, Thomas and Harry Kerr motored over from Fennimore, Friday and spent a few hours here.

—Mrs. Mary E. Judd and sons Baxter and Ellsworth went to Fennimore Saturday afternoon to visit over Sunday with Mrs. H. E. Draggs.

—Mrs. Joseph Kretchmann of Fennimore, who has been visiting friends in Lancaster the past week left for her home Saturday afternoon.

—Attorneys Kopp and Brunckhorst, Gardner and Gardner, J. W. Murphy, James Dolan and R. Goodsell, of Platteville, were here Friday on business.

—Prof. F. W. Van Dusen left Thursday for Chicago, after spending a few days here with relatives. While here he gave a recital on the pipe organ in Boscobel.

Joseph Bock reports that on Hallowe'en some unknown parties removed a rug, rocking chair and porch chair from the porch at his home. A queer idea of a good time.

—Drs. S. W. and J. C. Doolittle performed an operation Thursday on the 15-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, living on the Bailie farm near the Rock school house.

—W. B. Dyer has sold his barn on the M. E. church lot and also a lot south of his livery barn, to Fred Ingroff. Mr. Ingroff intends to move the barn on this lot that he has recently purchased, and use it for a repair shop.

—Burrows & Winskill went to Platteville yesterday to bring over two of the new Dodge cars. This firm went into the automobile game about October 1, and to date has disposed of six cars, all of them in and around Lancaster.

—The ladies of the R. N. A. were entertained at their hall on Friday evening, November 5. The committee, consisting of gentlemen, members served the refreshments of which fifty-seven people partook, and all agreed that they were royally entertained and wish the men would serve oftener.

Dr. and Mrs. S. E. Hassell departed Monday morning for Watrous, New Mexico, where they will visit for an extended time. From there they will go to Los Angeles, where they expect to make their future home. Mr. and Mrs. Hassell have lived here for many years. Their departure is a source of regret to their many friends.

—The following members were transferred from Pleasant Ridge church to the Lancaster Methodist church, last Sunday: Mr. and Mrs. John Pollock, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. Edward McLean, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard J. Holzinger, Mrs. Marie Hoffman, Mrs. Emma Knotwell, Mrs. Manda Backus, Mrs, Emma Unger Earl, Mark and Elize Hoffman.

—Hugo Keehner of the town of Potosi called in Lancaster on business last week and paid his respects' at the Herald office. Mr. Keehner, it will be remembered, was one of the men who slid off the roof of a barn they were working on at the Keehner farm, the latter part of May, last, and lit some considerable distance out and down on the earth below. Mr. Keehner was the only one of the four to receive serious injuries and he still walks with a cane as a result of a fractured thigh received that day.

—During the week beginning Nov. 15, with the exception of Tuesday night, the Orpheum will be run as a benefit for the cemetery association. The program is as follows: Monday, two reel drama, "Dorothy": comedy, "Simp and the Sophomores"; Wednesday and Thursday, three reel special, "The Irish in America." Friday, and Saturday, "The Little Singer." Hearst-Selig News Pictorial. "The Professional Diner." Mr. Burr will have a special picture on Tuesday, as usual. Your generous patronage is solicited during this week.

—Dr. J A Gault went to Milwaukee Monday on business returning today.

Father Wambold went to Fennimore Tuesday to visit with friends.

—Mrs. Charles Manning, of Fennimore, was in Lancaster Tuesday on business.

—Virgil Scott, the 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Scott, is seriously ill.

Mrs. Florence Bradley went to Fennimore Tuesday for a brief visit with friends.

—Attorney Jens E. Jenswald, of Fennimore, was a Lancaster business visitor, Friday.

—J. B. Gilligan and family of Bloomington, spent Sunday with Frank Steil and family.

—Mr. and Mrs. Guy Horsfall are the happy parents of an 11 3/4-lb baby girl, born last Wednesday.

—Mrs. A. J. Pipkin, of Boscobel, arrived here Monday and is a guest at the home of her niece, Mrs. C. F. Budworth.

—Mrs. Frank Nathan returned to her home in Superior, Wis., after a brief visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Muesse.

Mrs. C. F. Budworth and little son, Donald arrived home from Boscobel Thursday noon, after an extended visit with her aunt, Mrs. A. J. Pipkin.

—Miss Emma Schreiner left Tuesday afternoon for Chicago, where she will visit several days with friends. She will also visit a few days in Milwaukee.

Lewis Lau, aged nineteen, of Cassville, was brought to Lancaster Sunday and examined as to his mental condition. He is the son of Nelson J. Lau, of Cassville, and has been suffering from epilepsy for the past two years. When brought here he was in a stupor and seemed to be in a very serious condition. Drs. Gault and J. C. Doolittle recommended that the young man be taken to Mendota for treatment and Sheriff Heil accompanied him there, Sunday.
