FOREIGN FANTASIES.
Seepage of foreign fantasies into our national life over a period of years, especially since the World War, has made available for the restless and dissatisfied any number of silly doctrines to which they can become attached with little thinking and less energy. The one attracting the most attention at the present time, and probably one of the most vicious from point of seductive theories, is Communism. This dreg of ancient Europe thrives on the misfortune of others, and the unsettled conditions of the past few years has been a fertile field in which to spread its unsavory appeal.
Fortunately, the bulk of the American people are still grounded in the principle that to each will be given according to his merit. So long as we can imbue that simple but ancient fact into our children and our rising generations we stand a pretty good chance to survive the unholy creed of Communism or any of the other impossible "isms."
Mark Twain, that famous humorous and philosopher, analyzed Communism in a few brief sentences way back in the '70s when he visited Europe.
He wrote:
Communism is idiocy. They want to divide up the property. Suppose they did it- it requires brains to keep money as well as to make it. In a precious little while the money would be back in the former owner's hands and the Communist would be poor again. The division would have to be re-made every three years or it would do the Communist no good.
