"Yesterday we had great news from Antigua; the Crescent man of war has taken and carried in there a French sloop from Brest, by whom they had the news of the destruction of the French fleet under M. Conflans, they having put out, and meeting with Adm. Hawke, after a smart engagement he took and destroyed 25 sail, and lost 5 of his:--What effect this will have in Europe, God knows; but it seems to me as if the French must now give up entirely.-- This news comes down from good authority, and I believe may be depended on."
Extract of another Letter from St. Eustatia, dated January 12, 1760.
"Two days ago we had advice from Antigua, that one of his Majesty's frigates had taken a sloop from Brest, bound to Martinico with dispatches, the Captain and Merchant of which affirm, that the Brest fleet had sail'd, consisting of 21 ships of the line, and about 50 transports; and that Admiral Hawke's fleet had fallen in with them, taken and destroyed almost the whole fleet, with the loss of 7 on our side; and that 4 of Bompart's fleet were also taken by another squadron of English ships."

Event Details
A French sloop from Brest captured by the Crescent man of war brought news to Antigua of the French fleet under M. Conflans sailing and engaging Admiral Hawke's fleet; after a smart engagement, Hawke took and destroyed 25 French sail, losing 5 of his own. Another captured sloop bound to Martinico with dispatches confirmed the Brest fleet's composition and near-total destruction by Hawke, with additional captures from Bompart's fleet by another English squadron.
