THE OLD, OLD STORY.—Again the
country is shocked by the same old
story—twenty colored men killed by
a sheriff's posse, and no white men
hurt. The Associated Press dispatch
calls it "war." It should be called
by its right name, an inhuman
butchery of defenseless men by the
white savages of the South. Democracy
thrives on murder; its majorities
in the South are based upon
it, and present indications make it
apparent that the process of securing
a full Democratic vote in the
fall elections has begun. It will call
for the murder of a few hundred colored
men, but this, among the chivalric
Democrats of the South, is a
commendable virtue.

Now that the butchery of the
blacks has commenced we may expect
to see the record questioned,
and its effect on fair minded men
neutralized by the cry of the "bloody
shirt" again, from the opposition
press. Can it be possible that justice
no longer influences the people,
and that these crimes against humanity
and civilization are to be
passed unheeded?
