Charges Reduced Against Navy Man

Lawrence M. Ball, 17, of the Naval Base waived preliminary hearing yesterday before Justice of Peace Ira Albury and pleaded not guilty to a reduced charge of improperly exhibiting a dangerous weapon. The youthful sailor had originally been charged with "assault with intent to commit murder" as a result of an incident last week in which he threatened city police officer Richard L. James with a pistol after he was surprised in the act of entering a parked car.

Ball's bond was reduced from $500 to $100 and he was bound over for appearance in Criminal Court.

the youth by the owner of a late model sedan which Ball was said to be attempting to enter. One witness, Ullyses Ragland had told police that he had observed the sailor as he smashed three windows on the car. The owner of the vehicle did not appear to sign an affidavit against the youth.
