Full Text

A writer in the last Knoxville Register has furnished some strictures on the bill, at the time pending in the Legislature, for establishing Loan Offices; in the course of which he shews, by a calculation, which appears very reasonable, that the cost of this experiment to the State will be at least four hundred thousand dollars; estimating the amount to be loaned at 750,000 dollars, and the business to be wound up within ten years. The question is probably settled before this time; though we observe that, in the course of the Debate, one day's sitting of 6 or 7 hours was wholly taken up by the speeches of three members on the question—which shows at least that it is one on which much may be said on both sides.
