CLEVELAND. - In commemoration of its fiftieth anniversary the Cleveland branch of the NAACP is launching a major membership drive with a goal of 15,000. The Cleveland drive is typical of many such membership drives being conducted throughout the country in an all-out effort to recruit new workers and increase the strength of the vital work being conducted by the Association. Cleveland's campaign gets under way on September 16 at a mass meeting with NAACP Southeast Regional Director Ruby Hurley as speaker. Cleveland Councilman Leo Jackson is general chairman of the campaign Mr. Jackson stated that he would like to refuse direction of this year's drive, but added, my commitment to the NAACP and to the civil rights cause is so great as to cause me to rearrange my program so that I may give maximum time to this project. "Every man in public life must take his turn and make the personal and financial sacrifice necessary to make our NAACP program a success." In Camden, N. J.. National Board Member, Mrs. Daisy E. Lampkin, for many years a bulwark of NAACP activities and one of its greatest fund-raisers, will conduct a campaign which has as its goal 2,500 members. Dr. U. S. Wiggins is president of the Camden branch. An October - November campaign directed by field secretary Gertrude Gorman in Baltimore seeks a total of 15,000 members. Baltimore has conducted vigorous voter registration, public accommodations and other drives in recent years. Chicago, Ill., will conduct its membership campaign in October and November with a goal of 25,000 strong. Colin Cromwell. field secretary, will direct the drive. In Milwaukee, Wis., the branch is seeking 3,500 members and will be assisted by Rosalind Cheagle, field secretary.
