STEALING HIS EMPLOYER'S MONEY
Charles E. Littlefield, late a traveling agent for Watrous, Boylan, Fay & Co., of No. 375 Broadway, who was arrested and temporarily committed on a charge of embezzling letters containing drafts and checks remitted to his employers, was yesterday arraigned at the Tombs for examination. In the possession of the accused had been found letters from various parties, announcing that they had enclosed checks and drafts for various sums in payment for furs consigned to them by the firm. Wm. Clark, of No. 66 Chatham street, made oath that on the 19th inst. Littlefield called on him, and produced a check for $103 signed by H. C. Blodgett, and drawn to the order of Messrs. Watrous, Boylan, Fay & Co., on the First National Bank of Seneca, N. Y. He
SUSPECTED THE INDORSEMENT
and so declined to receive the check. The indorsement was subsequently ascertained by him to have been forged. On the evidence he presented, the magistrate committed the accused to await a trial. He is a native of Maine, aged 23 years. In spite of the overwhelming array of evidence against him, the accused persisted in declaring himself innocent of the serious charges made against him.
