New-York, November 20.
CHARTER ELECTION--Last evening the polls for Charter Officers for the ensuing year, closed in this city. We have not yet been able to obtain the official returns this evening, but we have heard enough to announce the complete success of the federal tickets, in the 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 6th and 9th wards. In the 10th ward the federalists have chosen their assistant Alderman, Assessors and one Constable, in the Common Council the votes will now stand 15 federal and 7 democratic. This is a triumph for the friends of peace, liberty and commerce.
It appears that every man did his duty. But our friends in the sixth, seventh and tenth wards, deserve more than common praise; two of these wards, heretofore democratic, are now regenerated; the character of the sixth is now established---and though the democratic alderman in the tenth ward is chosen, it appears that he is indebted to federal votes for his election; a number of federalists, on account of his correct conduct heretofore, being willing he should retain his situation. In the seventh al though success did not attend the exertions of our friends, yet they have shown the administration men, that the war is unpopular, even in that ward, and there is very little doubt but that at the next charter election, the ward will be federal.
