INSTRUCTION IN TEAMWORK
Fall. Crisp, invigorating weather. Jack Frost has just painted our hillsides with his scarlet brush.
There's football in the air these days.
And this reminds us of a little talk we like to give at this time of the year. Every time we see the members of the local high school football squad trot out on the field for a work out, we feel like shouting:
"Go to it boys. It's an important part of your education."
The work of Coach Morse and his band of young huskies should be regarded, we feel, as a course in team work.
The boy who goes through a hard season's work with the team or squad learns that the work of the team is more important than the spectacular playing of individual stars, he learns the value of co-operation, he comes to suppress his desires for personal honor for the good of the team as a whole. He learns that the group is more important than any individual.
He also learns the value of loyalty-learns it in a sort of subconscious way, for it takes loyalty to the school and loyalty to the town to go out and work hard day after day and then stand ready to fight to the last bit of energy for the honor of the school colors. And every older man knows that this loyalty learned in school may carry a man a long way along the road of success later in life.
There are other important lessons that Coach Morse is indelibly impressing upon the minds of his wards. He is teaching them to become good sportsmen, never to take unfair advantage of an opponent, to play the game according to the rules -in short to become good American citizens.
