THE SPEAKER.
In the choice of a Speaker, which has been made by the House of Representatives we have a strong pledge of the future predominance of wisdom and patriotism in that House. In all points of view, both as it relates to the harmony of the House, and as it augurs the prevalence of federal principles, the event is to be considered extremely fortunate. Mr. Sedgwick, to a superior knowledge of every political interest of his country, adds, a thorough experience of the rules of parliamentary discussion, and an energy of manners peculiarly requisite to a station in which he will have various and contrary dispositions to conciliate. Happily in his private intercourse with the House, he commands the undivided esteem and respect of both parties; and it is hoped, that no ungenerous sentiment of jealousy or rivalry may hereafter weaken his claims to their continuance. From a large proportion, we are assured, he will always receive a candid and liberal support; but alas, there are some, in whose hearts is all "the bitterness of gall," who will doubtless continually assail, either by open violences or insidious machinations! Against these, however, his own manly demeanor, will be the "best defence."
