COUNTY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES.

The law of the last Legislature, granting a certain amount of funds from the State Treasury to Agricultural Associations for the promotion of the science of Agriculture in the State, will be found in this paper. Each County in order to obtain the fund must comply with certain provisions of the law: 1st. Organize a Society, and 2d, raise a fund equal to the amount the population of the county, upon the ratio named, is allowed by the Act This plan of the State meets, we believe, with general favor, and we hail it as one calculated to encourage agriculture, and in its results, if properly carried into execution it must promote the wealth and prosperity of the State. We believe, for instance, by studying the nature of our soils, and by proper attention, wheat may be produced in a far greater abundance than it now is, and this done, much of the great amount of the money now carried out of the State, may be retained. We cite this article as one of the most important, demanding the attention of the people of Vermont, whose increased production, would, more than any other, perhaps, add to the wealth of the State. In order that a society may commence operations next year, the attention of those especially interested should be given immediately to the subject of an organization in each county. There must be as preliminary—an organization—then a fund is to be raised; and if the payment of a dollar a year be a condition of membership, in this way, doubtless, the fund might be secured. Then early in the season the premiums upon the production of various articles and improvements must be made public. To do this, an organization should be completed in the spring. We throw out these hints that public attention may be directed to the subject early, and to induce, if the plan meets the public mind, the early adoption of the necessary steps—in order to carry it into execution.

The law grants funds from the State Treasury to Agricultural Associations for promoting agriculture. Each county must organize a society and raise matching funds based on population ratio to obtain the funds. The plan encourages agriculture, potentially increasing wheat production and retaining money in the state. Societies should organize immediately for operations next year, with membership at a dollar a year, and announce premiums in spring.
