Police Escort Tree Movers To Surprise

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Tree movers got a police escort and a big surprise when they rolled into this city with a 50-foot oak tree after a difficult, 75-mile trip from Cato, N.Y.

The police escort yesterday was to make things easier as the huge tractor-trailer with its massive cargo moved through the crowded streets to the new War Memorial Building grounds.

The surprise?

No one at the memorial wanted the tree.

"What's this?" asked Harold S. Rand, an official of the memorial, although he could see it was a tree.

"It was ordered," replied J.D. Butts, owner of the Butts tree movers of Cato.

Yes, agreed Rand, but not for delivery until February.

Plans called for six of the trees pine oaks, to be planted then between the memorial and the Genesee River. Rand said February is the best month for transplanting such trees.

No one knew how the confusion arose.

The police escorted the tractor trailer and its lonely oak back to the city line.

But Mr. Butts traveled the rest of the long way back to Cato alone with the tree and his thoughts.
