WHITERIVER - Western Lumber and Moulding Company of Snowflake were high bidders for the Canyon Creek No. 1 Logging Unit, it was announced here this week by Harry Kallander, Agency Forester.
Western was awarded the contract on a high bid of $18.05 per MBF for pine; $7.50 per MBF for Douglas Fir and $5.00 per MBF for White Fir. Kallander reported the price was the highest bid ever received on a unit this size.
The unit is located in the northwest portion of the reservation, north of Chediski Lookout, and comprises almost 15 million board feet of timber.
A total of five firms submitted bids on the unit with Charson-Reidhead Logging Company, Show Low, submitting the next lowest bid.
Cutting on the timber is to be completed by December 31, 1964 with sawing to be done at the Western company mill at Heber. Green lumber will be processed at Snowflake.
Kallander reported the number of White Mountain Apaches employed by Western Lumber and Moulding is not known at this time.
