The last letters which we have heard of from South-Carolina, are dated the 21st and 22d of November, from the High-Hills of Santee. They say, that the American army under Gen. Greene, reinforced by a considerable body of militia, had on the 20th passed on the Congaree (now called the Santee) to proceed down the country towards Charleston, and that our gallant General would not decline battle upon proper terms. These accounts give some credit to the whispers circulating in New-York, of a defeat of the British near Charleston, more especially as an embarkation has lately taken place, of 1200 or 1500 men, though 3000 is the number publicly known of.
These letters from Carolina further say, that the British had evidently gotten a panic, and would probably, upon another check, shut themselves up in Charleston: that the lower country, till General Greene's march, had been open to the incursions of both armies; of ours, as far as the Quarter-House, within 6 miles of Charleston; of the enemy, for 50 miles back: that their horses were greatly reduced and bad; — ours numerous and good: that the General had waited some time to hear whether the French fleet were to call at Charleston, and what reinforcements were coming from Virginia; that he had left about 600 convalescents and sick at the Santee heights.
