Full Text

A gentleman lately from Algiers, gives the following account of those miscreants, that they are very formidable at sea, that six stout frigates have lately sailed from that port, which are to cruise along the coast of Portugal, and about the Canary Islands. The largest of the above frigates mounts 44 guns, and they are exceeding fine vessels, built upon the European principle, and are manned with numerous crews of resolute fellows, who are daring, and fight desperately. He further adds, that the Corsairs are continually bringing in prizes of different nations, and that they are extremely severe on their captives.

He also says they have many thousands in slavery, amongst whom is a number of Americans, which they have taken since their separation from England; and unless the United States can find means to make peace with the Dey, whose imperious demands are very exorbitant, their trade up the Mediterranean, and also to other parts of Europe, will be totally annihilated.
