The fog that blanketed the north end of Kodiak Island Sunday caused many mishaps and delayed arrivals in town by boats and planes.
Vince Daly was returning from Kulik and Brooks lake with a fishing party and was unable to land here because of the fog. He flew to Afognak Lake where it was clear and stayed at Burl Clymer's camp.
The CAA boat ran aground near the beachcombers on one of its regular trips from Woody Island to town. It was towed off by another boat and no damage was done.
Alf Madsen's Polaris was out with a sightseeing party but turned back for port when the fog began to move down the channel.
Bob von Sheele's boat was out with a party of 10 and was forced to drop anchor and spend the night until the fog lifted. (see story page 3)
Bob Acheson hit a rock with his speedboat while running in the fog and bent or broke the shaft on the outboard.
Party Spends Night In Fog
Ten persons, including a baby under one year old, spent the night on the island mail boat Shuyak, lost in the fog Sunday.
Out for a pleasure trip that started at 6:30 a.m., Sunday, hours ahead of the fog, were Robert von Scheele, skipper, and Mrs. von Scheele, their son Neil, Mr. and Mrs. George Cornelius, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kraft and three children.
After cruising toward Afognak (fogged in) and Karluk and Whale Island (beautiful and clear) the Shuyak headed for home but in the fog missed the buoy.
After circling in vain in fog that he described as the heaviest in 20 years, von Scheele dropped anchor for the night, not knowing where he was.
At 4 a.m., Kraft and young von Scheele went ashore in a dory to study the contours of the land, and the group found itself on the other side of Woody Island.
They came through the fog, picked up the buoy and got back to town just 24 hours after they started.
