Jesse Lloyd Taber, alias James J. Leyder, 32, was held in the Imperial county jail Saturday on federal charges including violation of the selective service act, escaping from the Missouri state penitentiary, and transporting a stolen car across a state boundary.
He was arrested in El Centro late Friday by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This man had been the object of a nationwide search since he and a companion, now in custody elsewhere, escaped from the Missouri state penitentiary.
After the escape from the penitentiary, FBI officials were informed, Taber and his companion stole an automobile to use in making their getaway. They were accused of taking this supposedly stolen car across a state boundary, making it a federal offense.
Officials of the FBI said Taber was working in a lettuce shed in El Centro when they found he had reached Imperial county. At the time of his arrest in El Centro Friday, Taber did not have the correct selective service credentials with him.
