Are Complaining of Lack of Buyers
Among the Rich of Gotham
Society.
New York, Oct. 13.—Some of the Fifth avenue shops, especially those which have moved from much less expensive quarters further down town, are complaining about the protracted country house season. At Newport alone more than 100 of the big cottages are still in commission, and the same story comes from the Berkshires and other resorts of New Yorkers. A few years ago Newport was practically deserted by cottagers before October, and the Berkshire set returned to town soon after that.
This year Thanksgiving day house parties will be almost as numerous as Fourth of July parties a few years ago. This is hard on the shopkeepers who depend on that trade, and worse is to come, because by the time the eastern and northern resorts are abandoned it is time for the fashionable to flit south. One of the biggest of the New Fifth avenue shops has 250 less salespeople employed than it had when it occupied its former downtown place. No wonder the shopkeepers groaned when, the other day, Mrs. C. P. Huntington arrived from abroad and declared personal purchases upon which she paid $10,000 in duties.
With one set of the rich wearing out their old frocks in the country, and the other frankly admitting that they find it cheaper to shop abroad and pay duty, than to shop here, there are going to be some grand old bargain sales announced shortly.

Fifth Avenue shops in New York face sales slump as wealthy residents extend stays at country houses in Newport and Berkshires past October, delaying return until after Thanksgiving before heading south. Shopkeepers suffer, with one major store reducing staff by 250. Mrs. Huntington's $10,000 duty payment on foreign purchases highlights preference for abroad shopping, leading to anticipated bargain sales.
