Salary.
It Creates Discussion In the Council
Meetings Every Night.
At the session of the city council Saturday night, the discussion of the street commissioner's salary was again taken up. The December meeting was partially devoted to the same question. The commissioner presents his bill of $3.50 per day for every work day in the month, and it is allowed. But not without a dissenting voice. Aldermen FitzPatrick and Barkovitch interpret the ordinance regulating that official's salary in a different way from that expressed by other members. The ordinance reads: "The street commissioner to receive $3.50 per day for each and every day actually employed."
The mayor, Mr. Shovlin and others claim that the commissioner is entitled to $3.50 per day until discharged, Sundays excepted. They say that he is hired for the purpose of attending to the streets, alleys and sidewalks, and that when he is not doing one thing he is doing another; that he notifies property holders to clean their sidewalks, and that he occasionally cleans street crossings.
Mr. O'Neill, the commissioner, put in a bill Saturday night for $106.50. It was allowed, FitzPatrick and Barkovitch voting in the negative. It was for 27 days' work in December and $12 team hire.
