Full Text

Whig Argument.—The subjoined incident is related in the Columbian Register as an illustration of the kind of persuasion made use of by the whigs at the late election in Connecticut.—Let no honest or poor man be deterred from exercising his rights as a freeman this day, by any threat of the aristocracy.

"In one of the neighboring towns, we hear that an aged democrat—a soldier of the Revolution and a pensioner—who is remarkable for his punctual attendance at the polls, was observed to be absent. A friend went to him, and asked him to go up and give his vote. The tears rolled down the veteran's cheek, while he remained silent; but his wife immediately told the friend who had called, that a creditor of the old soldier who had a mortgage on his place, had been there that morning, and threatened to turn them out of house and home, if the old gentleman dared to vote the democratic ticket. We mention this as one instance—but there were hundreds of others, nearly if not quite as bad, all over the State."
