One of the common problems of all Montana school boards is trying to provide adequate funds for school operations. Since income from school lands has always been a basic source, the public has been giving a closer look at the low level of current income from state lands. Raising the income to an equitable level is a possible way to reduce ever-growing property taxes.

Montana's School Foundation Program, originally designed to provide about 80 per cent of a school's finances, has been providing a smaller and smaller percentage each year. It is estimated that the Foundation Program will average about 67 per cent of school general fund budgets for 1962-63.
