Full Text

Let the day bring what it will in work or play, the utility dress is equal to occasion. It is plain and strong and shapely and these are all it needs to be for general wear at home or a sojourn in the country. It is usually made like the house dress or like aprons, of fairly heavy, washable cottons, but if the sort of wear to be given, it will save it from tubbing, serge or other durable woolens make a happy choice of material.

A serge frock, made like the model pictured, takes no thought of any sort of decoration, and is good for all sorts of wear. But if its owner chose to make it an all-day garb, slipped into in the morning and not slipped out of until bedtime, it will accommodate itself to an organdie collar and cuffs, or even tolerate these furbelows in Swiss embroidery and organdie for afternoon or an evening at home.

Whether of wool or cotton, it is made in one piece with plain skirt set on to a blouse under a belt of the material. The blouse fastens with snap fasteners at the front and the belt with actual buttonholes and buttons, covered with the material also. A second button on the belt proclaims that just once the frock forgot to be rigidly self-denying—one might have answered, but not so well as two.

The skirt opens a little to the left of the front and closes with snap fasteners. House dresses of percale and aprons in stripes, helped out by pockets and pipings in plain colors require to devote themselves to being simply dresses and nothing more. They are dresses that demonstrate how pretty pipings and pockets may be and how much style they can contribute to the least expensive of all frocks. They sell for less than two dollars, sometimes, the clever designing being thrown in without price. They have round, square and V-shaped necks, and are made with short kimono sleeves, and all in one piece.

To go back to the merely useful, trouser dresses and bloomer dresses, are to be reckoned with for indoor and outdoor wear, in the place of utility dresses. They promise to become a recognized fixture in the wardrobe.
