Wholesale Thieving From Sluice Boxes on the
Rich Gold Producing Creeks
Dawson, Aug. 30.-A number of big
robberies have been carried on by thieves
on the gold producing creeks back of
Dawson this month. They have com-
mitted seven big thefts, taking in the
aggregate more than $9000. Of this
all save $500 was in gold dust taken from
the sluice boxes of big mines.
The police have been utterly unable so
far to accomplish anything definite. One
arrest was made on suspicion, but the
case failed in the preliminary hearing.
It is thought perhaps that the robberies
are being made by an organized gang
working on some regular system. It is
a strange feature that nearly all the sluice
box robberies have been committed at
midnight while the night crews of min-
ers have been at their midnight meals.
The ordinary custom of the camp has
been followed in leaving the sluice boxes
unguarded while the night shift eats, but
it appears the community is becoming
too progressive to allow such induce-
ments for theft to pass unnoticed.
