WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 President Roosevelt made sweeping changes in the diplomatic service Thursday and also filled the vacancy left in the Supreme Court by the death of Pierce Butler.
Frank Murphy was elevated to the Supreme bench which gives Roosevelt appointees majority control of that tribunal.
General Robert H. Jackson will succeed Murphy as Attorney General,
In the diplomatic service, former ambassador Breckenridge Long of New York was named as assistant Secretary of State. Millionaire James H. R. Cromwell, husband of Doris Duke, was appointed as minister to Canada and Robert N. Scoter, Michigan, is the new Minister appointed for the Dominican Republic.
New Ambassadors include John Cudahy, Wisconsin, to succeed Joseph E. Davies in Belgium and Luxembourg. George S. Messersmith of Delaware to replace the late J. Butler Wright of Cuba and R. Henry Norweb, Ohio, now minister of the Dominican Republic, to Peru.
