VETERANS' CASE
WASHINGTON, July 27. (U.P.)
President Hoover this afternoon called Secretary of War Hurley and Secretary of the Treasury Mills into a hurried conference at the White House, at which were discussed means of evacuating the "bonus army" from billets on government property.
It marked the first time Mr. Hoover had taken a hand openly in the situation.
Following the conference there were intimations that there had been discussed a plan approaching temporary use of martial law in the event the situation does not clear up within 24 hours.
Secretary of War Hurley said they gave consideration to measures the army and other federal authorities could take within the law, should a crisis develop.
The President's conference followed word from local police officials that they had no authority forcibly to remove persons from property owned by the federal government and administered by the treasury department.
The President, it was indicated, was ready to act in the event the present situation was not soon relieved.
War department authorities said they believed it unlikely that military force would be required to deal with the bonus army, at least in the immediate future.
