Full Text

Effects of the Drouth on the Price of Cattle.-A gentleman who has been through all Southern Illinois, and who is extensively engaged in the cattle business, says that while cattle fit for beef measurably hold their prices, cattle unfit for beef can be bought for a song. The drouth is getting worse and worse. There is little or no hay or corn, and feed is very short. He says the utmost despair prevails among the stock raisers. He says the best of calves sold at $4, yearlings at $8, and two year olds at $10. Water had become so scarce that farmers had let their cattle out to find water in the running streams; where they best could. If the drouth lasts a month longer, some of the best herds of cattle will be entirely ruined.
