Friends & Brethren!
In my address to you of the last week, on the great importance of attending to your dearest interests-- viz. that of electing at your annual meetings in March next, the most suitable characters to serve as State Officers for the year ensuing--it was thought necessary to name such persons as would do honor both to themselves and the State; they being considered as staunch Republicans, and possessing every requisite qualification. The consequence of which, has been (as was expected) a rancorous production from one, supposed to be the reputed champion of Federal Logic (imported by the Tories to do their dirty work)--fraught with gross misrepresentation and abuse; as by such means, the enemies of Republican liberty have, for several years past, imposed on your credulity--for the purpose of supporting a bad cause. And in order more effectually to "gull the people of their good sense" the name of WASHINGTON is continually made a Stalking-Horse of--as if HE had been the patron of OLD TORIES! when, it is well known, that they would at any time during our revolution have hanged him, and deemed it a meritorious act, to evince their loyalty to the BRITISH KING. How mortifying, on reflection, must it have been to that great and good man--to be claimed as the Idol of those who had been so notoriously opposed to him, more especially since he gave his sanction to the never to-be-forgotten British-Treaty! --a circumstance, that his old friends (who are the true friends of American Independence) have regretted to the present hour; and for which act, it is conjectured he never forgave himself. But my fellow citizens, you have reason to thank the great disposer of events--that the enemies to republicanism have been thus far frustrated in their diabolical plans--and that the term "Washington Federalist" which was conjured up in the reign of terror has lost its charm, and is no longer to be regarded. You can now, with safety, sit down under your own vine-- and pursue your lawful business without putting the British Cockade into your hats to insure protection--or of being insultingly called a d--n Jacobin--while passing the streets, by the Federal-Bullies. I am not disposed to dispute the claim which the Tories have to John Adams;--they are very welcome to him, and every appendage belonging-- or in any wise appertaining. His deeds are already recorded in the book of accidents--therefore shall not expend any ammunition on his account. His work entitled "A Defence of the American Constitution" need only to be read, to determine its intrinsic merit --it being in fact, an encomium on the British Government and evidently exhibits the features of royalism. The heavy burdens which were, under the late administration laid on "the people" --of unnecessary taxes, have been repealed under the wise administration of our beloved Jefferson; and a system of economy substituted in-- stead of waste and prodigality--by means thereof our present resources are fully adequate to all the exigencies of government; and a surplus of four and a half millions of dollars, are now in the public coffers, ready to be applied as occasion may offer. You do not with painful sensation hear of any more eight per cent loans--no. my fellow citizens, every thing now goes on as it should do; public credit is in great repute--the 6 per cent funded stock is at par (30 per cent higher than in the reign of John Adams) and other kinds proportionably high. What a strange reverse within the short period of two years! and yet, Strange to tell--that BEST of MEN (Jefferson) is branded with every odious epithet--by a disappointed faction--falsely called FEDERALISTS. The only proper mode of judging of men and measures my fellow citizens, is--whether our situation is prosperous or otherwise; "the tree is known by its fruit"--and altho' the friends of monarchy continue to clamour and LIE (which is to be expected from their inveterate hatred to a republican government) yet you ought not to heed them, but persevere in the straight path of doing your duty; and elect such men for RULERS as have not in any wise forfeited your confidence-- men, that are ready and willing to have their conduct strictly scrutinized by their constituents men. ever disposed to risk their lives and property in defence of the Federal and State Constitutions--men, who are willing that others should enjoy every privilege equal to themselves--not to be considered merely as pack-horses--or in other words "hewers of wood and drawers of water" --such men, my fellow citizens were nominated in my late address; and being firmly convinced of their integrity and abilities shall again take the liberty to propose them for the respective offices of GOVERNOR--COUNSELLORS and SENATORS, and your candid attention is accordingly solicited--viz. JOHN LANGDON, for Governor. For COUNSELLORS--viz. Levi Bartlett, Rockingham county, JOSEPH BADGER, Strafford do. Benjamin Pierce, Hillsborough do. Nahum Parker, Cheshire do. Moody Bedell, Grafton do. Having thus recapitulated the names of those, who are, by great numbers deemed worthy of your suffrages for the important offices above described--I shall with diffidence also remind you of the necessity of attending to the choice of Republicans for REPRESENTATIVES--which will effectually secure you from the artful designs of those who conspire against your liberties, and retrieve the State from the odious imputation which federal artifice has attached to it--namely Anti-Republican.
