WASHINGTON (A) — House Republicans today voted overwhelmingly to oppose a Democratic-backed plan to increase the membership of the House Rules Committee.
At a party conference attended by about 140 of the 174 Republicans, a resolution opposing the plan was adopted by a one-sided voice vote.
The move to increase the rules group to 15 members is backed by Speaker Sam Rayburn, D-Tex. The idea is to break a conservative coalition's control of the committee, now composed of 12 members.
A resolution to increase Rules Committee membership is scheduled for a vote in the House Thursday.
At one time there was talk of an alternative plan to change the Rules Committee lineup by purging Rep. William Colmer, D-Miss. from it.
Any possibility of this kind was officially dropped Monday.
