MORE HIGHWAY BIDS AWARDED

SACRAMENTO, Sept. 16. (U.P.)—Announcing contract awards totaling approximately $450,000 and low bids amounting to more than $700,000, the state department of public works today had completed launching the first unit of its "million a week" highway construction program designed to create 50,000 jobs before January 1.

During the three-day bid-opening period, offers of contractors for the various projects amounted to $3,417,448, a saving of better than $200,000 on the engineers' estimates for the work. Actual construction of the first unit is expected to begin during October, with jobs supplied for about 4,000 men.

Contracts awarded included:

Imperial county—Oiling 6 miles earth shoulders on border highway between Araz and Colorado river, V. R. Dennis Construction company, San Diego, $5,576.

Low bidders late yesterday were:

Riverside and Imperial counties—Shoulder oiling 21.7 miles of Los Angeles-San Bernardino-Calexio lateral, Matich Bros., and Geo. Gardner & Sons, Elsinore, $21,994.
