Campaign Pressed

CLARKSDALE, Miss. - Despite actions on the part of the officials of the circuit clerk intended to hamper Negro voter registration attempts, a vigorous voter registration campaign is being conducted in Coahoma County under the leadership of the local branch of the NAACP.

Local white officials continue to harass Negro leaders in the community who are speaking out for justice and equality, including judgments of $40,000 libel damages against Aaron Henry, president of the Mississippi State NAACP, and the firing of his wife from her position as a public school teacher, a post she has held for 10 years.

Under tactics of the white community which closely resembles those of officials in Albany, Ga. Negro residents of Coahoma County face an extremely difficult task in obtaining their human and legal rights. Legal protests have resulted in fines and jail sentences but the NAACP has vowed to continue full steam ahead in its drive to register Negro voters in this beleaguered section of the South.
