Earning the Wages of Iniquity
A little morning paper, utterly in the interest of "pea nut John"—a paper that desires to have all the Chinamen run out of the country, because their labor is injurious to the interest of white men, but which sees nothing wrong or degrading, at present, about the negro race—a paper that endorses all the mock Union nominations, on the ground that the nominees, or at least some of them, are of bad principles and worse practices, which that paper does not and dare not deny—seems to be worried about the movements of the "Constitutional Democrats," and wants to "know how is the war to be honorably ended by the triumph of the Democratic party in California?" Nobody has asserted that the mere election of Democrats in California alone will surely end this war: but it is an established fact, proven by the events which have occurred within the last two years, that the party now in power is incapable of aught but destruction. Looking back a few years, we find that the old Whig party—not a sectional party—was destroyed by the Republican; and that the latter was converted into an abolition machine: though, for the sake of humbugging and deluding the masses, it retained the name of Republican. That party threatened to destroy the Union, or abolish slavery, and for them, at this time of day, is claim to be Union savers, shows that they are false to the country as they are to truth and honor. They rejected the Crittenden Compromise, while, through the Machiavellism of the U. S. Wm. H. Seward, every means that falsehood could suggest were taken to delude the South and hoodwink the North: and the little morning sheet, of which we speak, was one of the vehicles used for the dissemination of Administration falsehoods, and well it is earning the wages of iniquity. Senator Douglas charged the responsibility of plunging the Nation into a war that cannot be beneficial to America and mankind, upon the Republican party: and having forced a war the especial benefit of the negro race and the abolition party, their Administration is found unequal to the task, though a large number of Democrats, either assisted. It is not what the Democrats can do, but it is what the others are proven unable to do: hence we assume that a change in Cal. and elsewhere may be of service, we know and experience that the Republicans are "played out," and have no claim to aught but condemnation.
