NEW YORK, March 26.—(A)—A 15-year search that extended through several western states and into Mexico has ended with the arrest of a Brooklyn man in Alaska, Deputy Chief Inspector William T. Whalen announced today.

The prisoner, Jerome Body, 47, Negro, alias Maurice Hill, is wanted for questioning in the holdup and shooting of Richard Cardounel in 1933 in a Brooklyn hallway.

Whalen said Body had agreed to return to Brooklyn and two detectives are expected to arrive with him April 5.

Whalen and Detective Lt. Joseph Regan gave this outline of events since Cardounel was robbed of $300 and died an hour after he was shot:

A witness told police Body did the shooting, but a search failed to locate him. His fingerprints and pictures were obtained from Manhattan headquarters.

Copies were made, the Federal Bureau of Investigation checked the prints and circulars were sent through the country.

The trail led to Texas, Mexico and California, but each check was too late, the man had moved. Two months ago information was received that he might be in Seattle, but he couldn't be found there.

Seattle police suggested checking Anchorage, Alaska, as a boat had sailed a short time before the request was received to look for Body.

A circular and the prints were sent to Alaska, and Det. Sgt. S. Martin at Anchorage recalled that a man answering the description had been arrested in a fight, fined and released only three days earlier.

Investigation disclosed the man had gone to Adak Island, in the Aleutians, as a civilian employee of the Army.

Martin informed Army authorities of the search and Body was arrested and returned to Anchorage.

Whalen and Regan said they had been advised Body admitted he had held up Cardounel, but denied the shooting.
