Forty-eight years ago, on May 4, a riot call was sounded in the police station on Des Plaines street, Chicago, and a few minutes later 176 policemen hurried to the old Haymarket to quell a riot. They had hardly reached it before a dynamite bomb was hurled into their ranks, killing nine policemen and wounding more than 70 other officers and spectators.
The bomb was thrown by one of a group of anarchists. A number of arrests were made, and convictions and executions followed after able lawyers for the defense had made every effort to free the men.
Last Monday five survivors of the detail of policemen engaged in the Haymarket riot gathered to revive memories of the terrible ordeal through which they passed on that night of May 4, 1886. The youngest of the five was 75 years old and the oldest 87.
The incident is cited to show that a half century ago in the United States the forerunners of present-day Communists and gangsters were a serious police problem. We hear much of Communist manifestations in this country today but none of them has approached in violence that of the anarchist outrage in Chicago in 1886.—Spartanburg Herald.

Few of the famous will be remembered 25 years from now. Nobody saves cigarette and soap ads that long.
But how do great fortunes grow faster than they can be spent? Are there no women in the family?
You can tell the chairman of the committee. He's the only one that never has time to use a chair.
