A Good Hit.
The Washington Sentinel, (Democrat) contains the following well-written paragraphs:
"People now-a-days cannot move a peg without being accused of making war on the Administration. There was a deaf old woman who resided in the Brick Row, who, whenever she saw any bustle or commotion, always judged that 'the kitchen chimney was on fire.' So is it with the crew of politicians to whom we allude. No matter what is done that is not an attack on the administration. The whole thing is a trick, and nothing else. They see the influence of the administration by the old Jews and the one sanctuary—as a refuge, a shelter, a protection etc.
Senators and members of the House of Representatives, being under oath, cannot offer a resolution, cabinet elect an officer—committees cannot report proper and necessary bills, without being accused of making war on the administration."
Very good and very true. 'Blind and obedient, or you are opposing the administration. Servile adulation, or you are trying to break down the democracy. Sycophant flattery or you are an enemy of Franklin Pierce! The "kitchen chimney is on fire," if you do not follow the lead, in every instance: and if you attempt anything like an honest and impartial criticism, a conflagration of the whole edifice at once threatened: Some go. If this anti-republican state of things is to continue, will it not furnish some foundation for the insinuations of English writers that their American cousins are not so transcendently capable of self government; of untrammeled political and personal independence, as they endeavor to make the world believe?
There is no question but our president and his cabinet receive as much adulation and flattery as Queen Victoria and her cabinet. Let any one so disposed, draw the moral.
