A Young Man's Fancy Lightly Turned in that Direction Ends In a Sojourn In Our County Jail—A Cruel Parent Did It. Assisted by an Officer

Deputy Sheriffs Jones and Pryor brought in and lodged in jail a young man named J. B. Winders, yesterday evening, whom they had arrested near Hutchins, in this county, on a charge of carrying a pistol, and defying a deputized officer of the law.

Winders' story is one of unrequited love in which the never-failing stern and unyielding "parent" cuts a conspicuous figure. He and his inamorata, a young girl about fifteen years old, were engaged to be married and the day for the happy consummation of their plighted love had been set, but the unrelenting pater familias spoiled the proceedings.

It lay before the marriage was to have taken place he bundled his daughter up and sent her off to a friend, a Mr. Gardner, living in this county, on Duck creek. But the long, weary miles that intervened did not deter the infatuated young lover, and with gripsack in hand he trudged here all the way from Freestone county a foot, in which county all the trouble began.

Going to the residence of Mr. Gardner, where his beloved was staying, he renewed his protestations of undying love, but a change had come over the spirit of the maiden's dreams, and she told him she could not see it in that light.

Giving her one reproachful look, he rushed madly from the house and fired his pistol in the air. Only this and nothing more. But Mr. Gardner felt that the peace in that neighborhood had been disturbed contrary to the laws of the great state of Texas, and he hied himself before Mr. Myers, a justice of the peace, and swore out a writ for the young man's arrest. The justice, in order to speed the ends of justice, deputized him as an officer to effect the arrest, but on attempting it, the newly made officer found that the young man made strong objections. Mr. Gardner, not desiring to take the infatuated lover by force of arms, came in yesterday morning and informed Sheriff Moon of the affair, the young man in the meantime making rapid strides towards Hutchins. The two deputies were dispatched after him and brought him in, as above stated.
