In confirmation of our statements in regard to the genuineness of the signature of Moses White, Esq., affixed to the celebrated Jacksboro letter, charging Gov. Johnson with appealing to the sectional prejudices of the people of that place, we re-publish the following from the Knoxville Register:
A Falsehood "Spotted."
The miserable insinuation made by the Standard of last week, that "he had been informed, &c.," that Mr. White never endorsed the statement concerning the Jacksboro' discussion, is too contemptible for respectful notice. The following note will set the matter right abroad. We care nothing for it here, as we have seen no one that believed a word of it:
Jno. M. Fleming, Esq.:-Justice both to you and myself demands that I take public notice of a paragraph that appeared in the last issue of the Standard. I would simply assert that the statement made by the Standard is false. The Editor was notified by me that it was false before it appeared.
My name was signed to the account of the discussion at Jacksboro', with both my knowledge and consent.
Respectfully,
MOSES WHITE
Knoxville, July 22d, 1855.
It is due to history to state, that Mr. White, on the appearance of the article referred to, gave the Editor (the nominal Editor of the Standard) a practical illustration of the fact, that a man's neck may sometimes be encircled by something else than a cravat, and that the foot may be adapted to other uses than walking. Cost of the lesson-five dollars to the instructor.-Register.
