Full Text

Translated from the LEYDEN GAZETTE. April 5.

Private letters from Paris informs us, that on the 29th of March was held at Versailles, a great council, relative to the matters upon the carpet in the conferences at Teschen, the signature of the treaties was retarded by the insertion of some clauses foreign to the principal subject, viz.

The French Ministry intend to make good use of their mediation to bind the states concerned in that business, to acknowledge the American independency, under the denomination of the republick of the American United States; the contracting parties are noways averse to this demand, though foreign to their interest, but they wish, on their side, that France would acknowledge the validity of the division of Poland, and confirm it by her assent. This reciprocity is so natural, so agreeable to the situation and interests of France, that it is not supposed she will refuse it.
