Editors Occidental and Vanguard:—

I have just been reading the August number of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine," and am sorry to find therein so many manifestations of desire to nurse and keep alive ill feelings between the people of the North and the South. These little filthy anecdotes marshaled under what is called the "Editor's Drawer," touching Southern society, plainly show the low animus of that degenerating periodical. "Straws show which way the winds blow;" and these contemptible gleanings of prejudice crop out abundantly through many of the pages of this Magazine. It is not enough that a terrible war should be waged against the gallant people of the South, and that overwhelming armies should sweep through their lovely country, leaving everywhere they passed ruin and desolation. Whew! There is the animus of pure, unadulterated, modern democracy, for you. The first is from a rank Copperhead sheet in New Hampshire; the editor of which evidently entertains a hope that Toombs will yet marshal his slaves at the foot of the Bunker Monument, when the grass is green and flourishing in the streets of New York, Boston and other cities of the loyal States. The second is from a Nevada correspondent, who is evidently sound in the faith entertained by the first. Both are certainly near relatives of Rev. P. V. Nasby, P. M., and look upon Puritans with like holy horror—looking for the speedy dissemination of democratic virus in the veins of the Northern people, to such an extent as to restore the reins of the Government to the hands of such men as Jeff Davis, John C. Breckinridge, et id genus omne. The first is most particularly sweet on New England! while the latter deprecates, deep down in his democratic buzzum, Northern articles in type which tend to "nurse and keep alive ill feelings between the people of the North and the South." Jes so.

Again—"It is not enough that a terrible war should be waged against the gallant people of the South, and that overwhelming armies should sweep through their lovely country, leaving everywhere they passed ruin and desolation."

Who fired upon Fort Sumter? Who waged war upon the Flag of Washington? The inhabitants of "their lovely country." Where did "ruin and desolation" prevail? In Andersonville, Libby, Lawrence and Fort Pillow. Overwhelming armies did "sweep through their lovely country." Why? To save the Union from absolute dismemberment, and wipe out treason from our "lovely country."

"O, consistency! thou art a jewel"—about as lovely and as often seen, in modern democrat, as "pearls of great price" in the snout of a swine.

If the Scribes, Pharisees and hypocrites who "destroyed widows' houses, and for a pretense made long prayers," were condemned by the Judge of all the earth, what shall be the fate of parricides, who, in committing that crime, have been guilty of all known to the dark catalogue?

Spout away, accidental and blackguard. you are unwillingly aiding in the good work of Reconstruction, which you greatly need.

Main Argument

harper's magazine fosters harmful north-south animosity post-civil war; the union rightfully fought to preserve the nation against southern treason, and democratic rhetoric undermines reconstruction.
