A GOOD BILL
The bill before the legislature now, introduced by Senator James H. Hammond of Richland county, proposing a three county district in a hardsurfacing road program, is a mighty fine measure, and should become law.
The three counties involved -- Lexington, Saluda and Richland -- will reap untold benefits if the program is speedily carried through. With the magnificent new bridge across the Congaree river at Columbia and hardsurfaced roads leading from Saluda and Lexington counties, the capital city will be much more accessible than at present. Lexington county trucksters and poultrymen furnish a large part of Columbia's daily needs, and the better the roads the more enticing the Columbia market.
Traffic is always heavy on the Jefferson Davis highway. It should have been paved ere now. And henceforth traffic will be heavy on the new road from the court house to Irmo. In fact, all the roads specified in the bill are indeed worthy. Here's hoping the legislature does not run into any stumbling blocks when the bill reaches third reading in the two houses.
