CHICAGO.-
Proof positive that Negroes do not rate lower than whites in mental ability is indicated by Northwestern Infant Intelligence Tests conducted for and reported in February Ebony showing that Negro tots often surpass whites in intellect.
Environment and not race is the major determining factor in intelligence," the Ebony story states, and adds:
According to psychology professor A. R. Gilliland who invented the tests, first results point to a seemingly intellectual superiority among colored infants. Of 1,500 babies under 12 weeks old who were tested, the 37 Negroes tested rated above average.
Higher rating is more a result of home environment than anything racial, the feature points out, as shown by tests of Negro babies from happy homes compared to those of whites from nurseries. Love and personal attention are the key influences on infants' minds, the story says.
Among infants shown undergoing Ebony's actual tests are 11-week-old Regina Wilson of Evanston, Illinois and 12-week-old Jane Wright Jones of New York. Jane, granddaughter of famed Dr. Louis T. Wright, is one of the smartest babies ever tested in New York.
