Rare Optimism Shown As Drills Continue Today
By HOYT HARWELL
MOBILE, Ala. — Both Senior Bowl coaches are predicting a happy day for the South in the sixth annual classic Saturday, just like they did before the last three games. The North won them all.
Jolly Steve Owen, director of the South forces and a rare optimist among coaches, is enthusiastic over the 25 stars picked for his squad.
"You know, I believe we've got better personnel than we've ever had," he said after looking at his team in several workouts.
"We've got some good big boys in the line but I like those backs. They can really go and we should be ready to give the fans a real showing this year."
Grim Paul Brown agrees with his opponent.
"Our line isn't as big as it has been in the past seasons. Those South boys are giants compared to what we have. Then those sand burns some of our players got in the Rose Bowl are going to hurt our offense quite a bit."
The "good big boys" Owen has included ends Max Boydston, 207, of Oklahoma, and All-America Frank McDonald, 201, Miami (Fla.); tackles Sid Fournet, 225, Louisiana State, and All-America Reed Rex Boggan, 235, Mississippi; guards Frank Minecevich, 240, South Carolina, and All-America Bud Brooks, 201, Arkansas, and All-America center Kurt Burris, 209, Oklahoma.
Among those backs," Owen calls Maryland's Dick Bielski as good a fullback as you'll see on the field Saturday. He can do anything a fullback is supposed to do."
Quarterback Bobby Freeman of Auburn "is really a fine quarterback," halfback L. G. Dupre of Baylor "showed me something in the Gator Bowl when he made that long run," and halfback Corky Tharp of Alabama "has been looking mighty good in our practice," Owen continued.
Brown, coach of the pro championship Cleveland Browns, need offer no apologies for his club, however.
He has such backfield standouts as Rose Bowl star Dave Leggett of national champion Ohio State at quarterback, Lindon Crow of Southern Cal and Bob McNamara of Minnesota at halfbacks, and All-America Alan Ameche of Wisconsin at fullback.
Brown also has weight up front, with ends Dean Dugger, 213, Ohio State, and Andy Nacrelli, 195, Fordham; tackles Dick Chorovich, 265, Miami (Ohio), and Frank Morze, 230, Boston College; guards Norm Amundsen, 220, Wisconsin, and Tom Bettis, 219, Purdue, and center John Damore, 210, Northwestern.
The squads will wind up practice with a single drill Friday.
About 30,000 are expected in 36,000 capacity Ladd Stadium for the kickoff at 1:45 p.m. (CST).
CBS will broadcast the game, but it will not be televised.
