Full Text

The Member from Braxton.

It has always been a source of deep regret to us, that we couldn't print a paper to suit the peculiar views of the Republican brethren; and doubtless every Democratic official feels sad over the fact that his administration is unsatisfactory to the more loyal portion of the community.

Such matters must prove to be a sort of everlasting artesian fountain of deepest sorrow to all those who are not in sympathy with the "saviours of the nation."

These melancholy reflections are induced by the fact that some anonymous Radical scribbler, writing from Braxton to the Wheeling Intelligencer, expresses his utter and positive condemnation of the course of Hon. D. S. Squires, the Democratic delegate from that county.

This is sad, indeed:

In the first place, the election of a Democrat to office is a sore affliction to the Republican brethren: and then, after having committed the crime of defeating the Republican idea, that a Democrat should vote as his conscience dictates—(the mandate of the Radical party to the contrary notwithstanding)—is something almost too hard to bear.

Daniel Steven Squires, by his straightforward, honest and manly course in the House of Delegates, won the esteem of Democracy and Republicans alike. He was not to be swerved from the path of duty—as he understood it—by fear, favor or affection: and he voted, as any honest man would, as his conscience dictated. He was sworn to do his duty, and did it: and this attempt of a little factious Radical scribbler to blacken his character, will result in securing for "the member from Braxton" the hearty endorsement of the decent people of Braxton, irrespective of party.
