Full Text

A FORMER advertisement, upon this subject, had appeared in some of the Richmond papers. It was dated March the 30th. and invited the Republicans to meet on the following day. That handbill had mentioned Mr. Charles Copeland, as an admirer of Adams's administration. These last words have produced a long and warm answer in the Virginia Gazette of yesterday. The writer considers this expression as a scandalous attack upon the whole personal and political character of Mr. Adams. When the gentleman has leisure to cool, he will surely be convinced, that these words do not extend so far. The writer in the Virginia Gazette vindicates Mr. Adams on the ground of a kind of encomium upon him, which has lately been pronounced in the house of representatives of congress by Mr. Macon, the speaker of that body. We beg leave to observe, that America did not contain a more inflexible antagonist to the whole administration, of Adams, than Mr. Macon. Wherever opposition occurred, Mr. Macon was always in the front of it. The reference of the handbill to Mr. Adams, was as slight and gentle, as words could make it. Hence, there is in this instance an utter misapplication of print and paper. Mr. Macon is quoted as a counter authority to the handbill. Every atom of his conduct demonstrates that every syllable of that piece would receive his most unqualified approbation.
